Caring
A group of Temple Sinai congregants whose goal it is to comfort in times of sadness; provide support in times of need and celebrate in times of joy.
A temple member who lives alone was released from the hospital after a heart bypass operation. The members of the Caring Committee took shifts for a week to help her until she was back on her feet. Another member had trouble driving at night and needed a ride to a Shabbat evening service. A Caring Committee volunteer gave him a ride. When a member's wife was in the hospital he needed help fixing dinner for his four children. A volunteer brought the family dinner.
The Caring Committee fulfills gemilut hasidim or deeds of loving kindness. As Rabbi Shimon, of Pirkei Avot fame said, "On three things the world is sustained: on the Torah, on the (Temple) service, and on deeds of loving kindness." The Caring Committee is a group of Temple Sinai congregants whose goal is to comfort in times of sadness, provide support in times of need and celebrate in times of joy. The services we offer are:
- Provide the Meal of Consolation for Shiva
- Present a plant in memory of a loved one
- Visit ill congregants at home or in the hospital
- Visit in person or over the phone
- Provide meals as needed
- Celebrate the arrival of a new family member
- Shop for food
- Provide transportation
- Help with laundry
- Assist with childcare or pet care
We do this with volunteers who are assigned a week when they are responsible for providing services to anyone in need.
We invite you to share in this opportunity to do a mitzvah that will directly affect someone's life AND enhance your own life. You can become part of a rotation providing our services a couple of weeks per year or you can become an "as needed" volunteer who may be called on to:
- Provide a ride to a Temple Sinai service
- Provide a ride to a doctor
- Help someone shop
- Change a light bulb or whatever is needed.
The more volunteers we have the more services we can offer. To help sustain the world, email Niamh Cahill.
